The Only 100 Year Old Grocery Store with a Dance Hall in the Back

Some places you plan a trip around. Others you stumble into and never forget.
The Mildred Store is the second kind, and it sits just 26 minutes from your cabin door at Southwind Lake Cabins.

From the road, it looks like what it has always been: a small town grocery store in Mildred, Kansas. Nothing flashy. No neon promise of a big night out. But step inside and you find shelves of everyday goods, a little nostalgia in every aisle, and a door to the back that opens onto something you will not find in any travel guide.

A dance hall. Wood beams overhead. Strings of lights glowing. A stage waiting for the band.

A Small Town Place With a Big Heart

Kansas has a way of keeping its best secrets in plain sight. Out here, the heart of a town is rarely a mall or a strip of chain restaurants. It is the place where people gather. For Mildred, that place has been a grocery store for more than a hundred years, and somewhere along the way the back room became just as important as the front counter.

That is what makes it special. This is not a venue built to impress visitors. It was built to bring neighbors together, and it still does. You can feel it the moment you walk in. The floors have held generations of boots. The walls have heard more love songs than anyone could count. And the people here have a way of making a stranger feel like a regular by the end of the first song.

From Charlie Brown's Grocery to The Mildred Store

The story begins in 1915, when a store opened its doors in Mildred, a cement boom town where the plant hummed and the streets stayed busy but… the boom faded. The store stayed, passed down through three generations, it became Charlie Brown's Grocery in the mid 1940s and served as the heart of the community for decades. Charlie and Lucille Brown knew their neighbors by name, and the deli's most famous sandwich carried his name too.

In 2014, after nearly a hundred years, the doors closed, and the town faced a long drive for groceries. Then two neighbors stepped in. Loren and Regena Lance, a farmer and a teacher who had shopped there since they were kids, bought the store, renamed it The Mildred Store, and set out to bring it back to life. They honored the Browns' legacy and soon opened the back room to music.

Today it is a place built to bring neighbors together, and it still does. The floors have held generations of boots. The walls have heard more love songs than anyone could count. And the people here have a way of making a stranger feel like a regular by the end of the first song.

Come Hungry, Shop Local

The Mildred Store is still a working grocery store, and a good one to wander.

Stop in on a weekday and you will find a hand written specials board at the counter, the kind that tells you exactly what kind of place you have walked into. Chili with a cinnamon roll. Tater tot casserole. Roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy. Ham and beans with cornbread. Ravioli with garlic bread. Real comfort food, made fresh for the day. Sandwiches are on the menu, and there is pie, so save room.

Then take your time in the aisles. The shelves carry the everyday staples, and you will often find local produce and locally raised meats worth carrying back to your cabin kitchen. The store posts its daily specials on Facebook, so look up The Mildred Store before you drive over.

Make a day of it. Lunch on a weekday, a dance on the third Saturday, and a cabin full of good groceries in between.

Every Third Saturday, the Whole Room Comes Alive

On the third Saturday of every month, The Mildred Store becomes a country music venue, and the hall fills with live music and people who came to dance.

Look at the faces on the floor. Couples who have been two stepping together for decades, moving as if the song was written just for them. Cowboy hats and church shoes. A little girl twirling in a sparkly dress beside grandparents who have not missed a Saturday in years. Nobody is performing for the room, everyone is simply part of it.

You do not need to know the steps. You do not need to be from here. You only need to show up, and the room will make space for you. Maybe you will dance every song. Maybe you will lean against the wall and watch, tapping your boot, grinning at nothing in particular. Both are welcome. Both are the point.

There is something rare in a night like this. No screens held up in the air. No one checking the time. Just live music, warm light, and a room full of people who are exactly where they want to be.

The Perfect Night When You Stay With Us

Picture it. A slow afternoon at the lake. Coffee on the porch, maybe a walk along the Southwind Trail, the kind of quiet that makes you realize how long it has been since you heard your own thoughts. Then you wash up, put on your boots, and head out for a night of live music in a place with a century of stories in its walls.

The drive is part of the evening. Twenty six minutes of Kansas roads, big sky, and golden light fading over the fields. You arrive a little hungry for something real. You leave with a full heart and a song stuck in your head.

Afterward, the ride back is quiet in the best way. Windows down if the weather allows. Stars or fireflies, depending on the season. A cabin waiting with the porch light on, and nowhere you need to be in the morning.

It is the kind of evening that turns a weekend getaway into a memory you tell people about later. Not because it was fancy, but because it was true.
