Southwind Lake Cabins
on Bourbon State Fishing Lake, Kansas

Golden sunrises. Dark sky nights.
Three cabins at the edge of the prairie,
and steps away from the lake.

A Kansas Lake Getaway Worth Slowing Down For

Southwind Lake Cabins are three private lake cabins near Elsmore, Kansas, tucked into rolling prairie and oak hickory woods beside Bourbon State Fishing Lake. Wake to sunrise light on the water. Cook on the porch. Sit by a fire until the Milky Way shows up. Then take a short drive to Humboldt, a small Kansas town with a big comeback story.

This is not a place you pass through. It is a place you pause and embrace.

WHY WE CALL IT SOUTHWIND

The Kanza people, whose name means People of the South Wind, gave Kansas its name. Long before roads and rails, the Kanza and Osage peoples lived, hunted, and farmed across this part of the prairie. The south wind was part of how they understood the land.

We named our cabins in honor of that history, and we tell the story in words, never in costume. When the warm wind comes up over the lake on a summer evening, you will feel why a people took their name from it.

To learn more, we encourage you to visit the Kaw Nation and the Osage Nation, whose stories these are to tell.

THE SUNRISE CABIN

Our guest favorite, and a Top 1% Airbnb home. Sunrise Cabin is built around a huge screened porch with a gas fire pit, charcoal grill, Blackstone griddle, dining table, and couch, all facing the lake. Two bedrooms each open to their own private porch. Out back, a second fire pit and seasonal raised garden beds invite you to stay awhile.

THE BLUESTEM CABIN

Named for the tallgrass that once rolled across these hills. Bluestem Cabin sleeps four across two bedrooms, with one queen bed and two singles. It is the right size for a family weekend, a friends' fishing trip, or two couples who want their own space.

THE BISON CABIN

Honoring the animal that shaped this prairie. Bison Cabin is the coziest of the three, with one queen bed and a queen pull out sofa. Quiet, grounded, and made for couples or small groups who want to unplug.

Bourbon State
Fishing Lake
Is Your Front Yard

Just across the road is Bourbon State Fishing Lake, a 103 acre lake in the valley of Wolfpen Creek, opened to anglers in 1959. Limestone bluffs and oak hickory timber frame the shoreline. Boat access, docks, and fishing piers are ready when you are, and the lake is known for channel catfish, largemouth bass, crappie, and redear sunfish. Some locals call it Elsmore Lake. Whatever the name, the water is calm and the mornings are unhurried.

Beyond the shore, a public wildlife area of native prairie and woodland is open for wandering.

RETREATS AND GETAWAYS AT SOUTHWIND LAKE CABINS

Each cabin is booked individually, so a retreat of 6 to 10 guests can reserve Sunrise Cabin, Bluestem Cabin, and Bison Cabin together and spread across all three, with shared gathering time on the porches and private rooms to disappear into when the work calls. A gift of peace and quiet with lake views, prairie wind, and the kind of silence that makes a page fill itself.

Southeast Kansas is an easy drive from Kansas City, Wichita, Tulsa, and Topeka, which makes it a realistic weekday retreat destination, not just a weekend one. Mornings on the porch, afternoons on the Southwind Rail Trail, evenings by the fire pit watching the sky change.

Good for:

  • Writers and artists on a deadline retreat

  • Small group retreats and workshops

  • Yoga, wellness, or creative gatherings

  • Founders and teams who need a few focused days away from screens

Dark Sky Stargazing
in Southeast Kansas

Out here, there is no city glow. On clear nights the Milky Way is visible, and the sky feels close enough to touch. Bourbon State Fishing Lake is even recognized as a meteor viewing spot, which makes the August Perseids and December Geminids worth planning a trip around.

Bring a blanket. Light the fire pit.
Turn off your phone. The show starts at dusk.
